10 Years Cancer Free and Counting – Success Despite The Obstacles

By Steve Eanes Just after my 30th Birthday in August 2000 the news came that I had been hoping not to hear.  “We have your test results.  The diagnosis is Stage 3 Malignant Melanoma.”  This was my second diagnosis in 2 years with this very often fatal disease.  The first time in July 1998 was due to a visible melanoma on my right leg diagnosed at stage 2.  At that time I received outpatient surgery and was given a clean bill of health after a few follow-up tests. This time, however, was a different story.  Being present in the lymph nodes and stage 3 completely changed the entire landscape.  My case was transferred to Dr. Richard White at the Blumenthal Cancer Center at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. The result of my meeting with Dr White was that I needed to have surgery immediately to remove lymph nodes in my right leg where the melanoma was present.  I would then participate in a clinical trial experimental treatment called Interferon Alpha for 1 year.  The 5 year survival rate for patients going through this process was 30%. Sitting in Dr. White’s office, my life up to that point flashed before my eyes.  My wife was a stay-at-home mom.  My son, Zach, was 1 ¾ years old.  And I had just turned 30. Dr White told me later, at the end of the 1 year experimental treatment, that he knew after this conversation I had a very strong chance of surviving due to the following incident. After he told me the treatment process I asked him the following:  “Dr White, are you saying that the 5 year survival rate is 30% or three out of ten?  He confirmed “Yes.”  He told me that I looked up at him with tears forming in my eyes, held up 1 finger and said “Dr White, I am going to be one of those three.” Today is the 10 year anniversary of the surgery to remove the lymph nodes in my right leg.  While I give complete credit to God for the fact that I am alive and well today, the rest of this article will be devoted to sharing with you how I was able to be blessed to overcome this.  You may not be facing a health concern.  However if you are facing a job, economic, family, physical or other uncertainty you can use these same two principles I used to achieve success despite any obstacles or diagnosis you have been given in your life. 1.  Positive Mental Attitude Dr White shared with me that one thing that stood out to him from our first meeting was that after being given the 5 year survival rate of 30% I held up 1 finger and told him with confidence that I was going to be “1 of the 3.”  No matter how dire your current circumstance seems to be, you must have a belief within yourself deep down inside your soul that you will survive and make it through. Don’t accept the negative diagnosis that even your friends and family may speak over you.  Your positive belief will turn into faith and before you know it your circumstances have changed seemingly overnight.  Two fantastic books to read and apply in your life on this topic are “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill or “The Success Formula” by Bob Burg. 2.  Baby Steps Eventually Equal Great Achievements One of my greatest blessings and accomplishments that came during the time of my diagnosis, surgery and subsequent 1 year experimental treatment is that I was blessed to remain...
